Charreada takes its name from Mexico’s charro tradition. A charro is a horseman or cowboy, a kind of working man who rose to stardom in the 20th century through film and literature. Today, enthusiastic teams of men and women pay homage to Mexico’s ranching heritage and keep the horse tradition alive through structured competitions in the lienzo, or arena.

Charreada is a colorful pageant. Contestants dress in traditional costume: men wear wide-brimmed hats, colorful neckwear, and a short jacket or vest, while the women on each drill team wear matching, full-skirted dresses or fitted skirts and jackets. They compete in a specially laid out arena; a splendid opening ceremony, often accompanied by Mariachi musicians, kicks off the event.

Two teams compete in nine men’s events and one women’s event. Men demonstrate their skills roping, riding trained and wild horses, and wrestling bulls, among other things. Women compete in the escaramuza; dressed in beautiful costume, they ride sidesaddle in a demonstration of precision riding skills. Each event is worth points; when the charreada is over, the points are tallied and the team with the highest score is the winner. The sport is an amateur event, so contestants ride for glory of the win rather than monetary rewards.
